Dedicated to "improving the health and wellbeing of the women of Sierra Leone", One World Women's Health has been a concept that has been evolving for ob/gyn Nina Seigelstein, MD for many years. After participating in medical/ surgical mission trips to Kashmir and Ghana, Dr. Seigelstein met Tom Johnson of Africa Surgery, Inc.
With his help, guidance, and protection, she organized and led her own teams of medical professionals in 2006, 2009, and 2012 to work at both the Saint John of God Hospital in Lunsar and the Holy Spirit Hospital in Makeni town.
In this northern region of Sierra Leone, there were no maternity wards and no gynecological care. On these trips, they performed major gynecologic/obstetric surgery on a total of 72 patients for the debilitating conditions of severe pelvic organ prolapse, enormous fibroids, pelvic pain and cancer. In addition, they saw about 300 women in the clinic, many who had traveled great distances to be seen and treated. The surgeries were all paid for with funds donated by family, friends, and colleagues back in the US. Hundreds of pounds of donated medical and surgical supplies, antibiotics, medications and equipment were also transported directly to the hospitals.

On those trips the tragic consequences of a lack of access to a proper obstetrical facility were seen firsthand, unfortunately, over and over again, --young women with ruptured uteri hemorrhaging close to death themselves, their infants already dead; women suffering the debilitating shame of constant leakage of urine secondary to obstetrical fistulas from prolonged labors; pregnant women septic and dying from infection. And these deaths and problems were considered commonplace and expected by the people and their families. The One World Women’s Health-Sierra Leone program of ASI has now been established to work to make these commonplace tragedies more of an exception than the rule in Sierra Leone.
Inspired by Gregg Mortensen's Three Cups of Tea, we at OWWH believe that we can significantly and positively change the dire healthcare situation for women in Sierra Leone. We are determined to make women's health a priority in Sierra Leone through the building of a quality fully functional Maternity Ward at the Holy Spirit Hospital in Makeni.
